L01: Visual effects in media

Special Effects -

  • Props -
  • Stunt Props - Sugar glass bottles
  • Models - Spaceships
  • Makeup - Edward Scissorhands (Scars)
  • Mechanised Props

Visual Effects are digital effects that are created in post-production (after all the recordings) They are created to make scenes hyper real, this gives a suspense building effect, excitement and worry for the viewer/audience

Special Effects are done on set, such as pyrotechnics

Rotoscoping -

CGI - Computer Generated Image

Mattes - Painted Scenery

Uses of VFX to enhance engagement

- Increases Visual Appeal

- Increases likelihood to watch it again, as adverts can be more cinematic

- VFX can technically create camera angles that would be too costly / risky to create in real life
- Keeping up to date with effects allows companies to date with audience expectations

- Hyper realistic ideas of products make them more desirable ( For example: Coca Cola)

- Can contextualise the product in a world that does not exist / no longer exists (Informs Narrative)

- Can save the advertisers money

Idents

What is the purpose of ident? The purpose of ident is to show the viewer that the producers o these channels and shows have a humours side towards all of this and values that we connect with on day to day life

How can visual effects assist the brand of a channel or product? - Visual Effects can create the product to look Hyper Real, this makes the product more appealing and appetising towards the target audience and real them in towards purchasing the product.

This videos use of visual effects enhance the video through suspense of the change 4 logo building up, the video is meant to be linked to aliens, through this video there are two people parked up on what seems to be Area 51, riddled with warning and danger signs. This is the use of CGI as they can make these blocks move round and fly, as the stereotype of aliens are spacey and have flying movements/objects
